   Go to your local 2nd hand store, look in the CD / DVD rack for computer programs, great you found a copy of windows 2000. It’s only costing you a quarter but surprisingly you can get $25 on EBay for it. That’s 10 times your money! Now you see hope. Take your $25 to your local flea market or yard sales. Scour for items that look really old, antiques that are priced to sell. For example you could of bought 5 antique dolls at $5.00 a piece. Cha-Ching they could bring $40 each on EBay.

6. Step 6

   OK this is another common stopping point for new eBay sellers. You have bought a few items and made about $150 – $300 profit so far. But what next? It’s getting hard to find deals locally and you can’t rely on this luck you’ve been having. Now comes the fun part.

7. Step 7

   Find a niche. Hopefully something you know all about, like fishing for example. You buy fishing gear all the time for yourself, so you are pretty familiar with the prices/brands/quality etc. Go to your favorite search engine and type “wholesale fishing gear”. Browse the results for a company that looks legit. You can tell by seeing if they are registered with the BBB. Don’t purchase from companies that are trying to sell to EBay sellers they usually cost too much. Wholesale Prices should be less than half of retail price on most items.

8. Step 8

   Take your $200 from EBay and buy a couple of cases of wholesale merchandise. For example you can buy 100 fishing hats for $2.00 each. Retail price is $16.95 each so you are able to offer them for a discount on EBay at $12.00 each. Sell all 100 and you will have over $500 profit from this deal alone.

9. Step 9

   Research your market. Consider EBay an actual business and dedicate time and effort to it. Enjoy your profits!

Assuming you’ve already started selling on Amazon.com, but a little worried about your sales, this article details some tips to hopefully increase your cash flow through the Amazon merchant account system. Good Luck!

1. Step 1

   WHAT YOU CAN SELL: On Amazon.com, you can sell books, CD’s, DVD’s, LP records, audio cassette tapes, VHS tapes, comic books, and some other items such as games. You shouldn’t have a problem creating a listing for anything media (the Amazon system pretty much has that avenue covered). But you may have some trouble with other items since this system is still in the works. So far, I haven’t had a problem listing games by entering in the UPC code. But there have been problems with other items not in the Amazon system. Obviously, the most sales will come from the media department.

2. Step 2

   WHERE TO GET YOUR ITEMS: As far as media is concerned, I have the best luck purchasing second-hand books from thrift shops like Salvation Army. I’m not exactly sure why, but items from these establishments have consistently sold well. Plus the profit margin is large enough for items like this. At 25 cents a book, how can you beat that? You can buy ten at a time and recoup your investment in one sale!

3. Step 3

   WHAT TO INVEST IN: Here’s my strategy, non-fiction sells the best. Self-help sells great. Anything having to do with fear, anxiety, or the paranormal (especially psychic books) sell exceptionally well. I don’t have a strategy for other forms of media, but CD’s, DVD’s, VHS tapes, LP records, and audio cassettes sell consistently enough. Just not in a set pattern.

4. Step 4

   THE LISTING: Be sure to enter in an accurate condition for your material (no surprises on the other end). Your description needs to be short and to the point. DO NOT TRY TO CONVINCE THE BUYER INTO PURCHASING YOUR MATERIAL! A simple: “Excellent condition! All pages intact. No pen marks. Some pencil marks on inside front cover. Cover worn due to use. Price sticker on back,” will do fine. Don’t say things like, “Buy in complete confidence,” or “Makes an excellent gift.” Just describe the item accurately, precisely, and in as little words as possible, then hit enter.

5. Step 5

   PRICING: Watch out for those penny pinchers, those sellers who love to price their books and media for a penny hoping for a quick sale. The only problem with that approach is either Amazon commissions or shipping costs will completely eliminate that profit. Here is my strategy: Nothing goes for less than 98 cents. Textbooks can only go down to $8.95. Otherwise, I’ll try to meet the low price. If I can’t, I’ll stick to my system. Most of the time, sellers will wonder why some media is so inexpensive, think something is up, and then purchase something slightly more expensive but not over the top. Like your item!

6. Step 6

   SHIPPING: Don’t let shipping costs eat into your profits. Purchase a stack of large manila envelopes, wrap your media in some newspaper, and tape the envelope shut. For heavier or larger items, you may have to purchase a separate envelope, but these cases should be rare. As far as mailing costs, go either media mail or first class. Choose Priority only when the buyer has indicated expedited shipping. If your item is under 13 ounces, you should be able to ship the faster first class for less or slightly more than media. Media takes about a week. First Class about 3 days. Priority, of course, takes two. The only other charge I would consider is tracking for 70 cents if your item is particularly expensive or collectible.

7. Step 7

   KEEP BUILDING YOUR INVENTORY: Using the above strategies, I don’t see a reason why you can’t sell consistently on Amazon.com. Keep building your inventory, though. You should be able to turn over about $400 per month on an inventory total of over 600 media items, which fits nicely on three large bookcases. Don’t get discouraged! It might not be enough to live on, but it’s nice to have a lot of extra cash lying around for unexpected expenses. Good Luck!
